Supported by the Southeast Asia Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence, the Creative Business Programme is a tailored short-form course delivering fundamental and transferable business skills for creative screen practitioners.

During this course, participants developed a unique story for screen idea through a vocational and applied learning programme within the ASEAN, US & NZ markets. Training culminated in a pitching session to local and international screen industry professionals from Netflix, TVNZ, Disney, 108 Media and more.

Course Content

  • Tuesday 15 November, 5.30pm - 8.30pm

    The first workshop explored and examined creative concepts. Questions were posed: Where does an idea start from? What do you need to explore your idea further? What kinds of research do you need to carry out?

  • Wednesday 16 November, 5.30pm - 8.30pm

    This workshop focused on the best ways to market & pitch ideas. In this session, heard first hand from a successful producer & screen content creator. In addition, the importance of spectacle and story was examined to show different ways of presenting ideas to a panel of industry experts and to identify the unique selling points.

  • Tuesday 22 November, 5.30pm - 8.30pm

    Funding and finance are a significant part of realising ideas. Participants heard from an experienced funding advisor and fundraiser about their journey into building meaningful relationships and partnerships, which have funded and grown their projects.

  • Wednesday 23 November, 5.30pm - 8.30pm

    This session focused on learning the different ways of setting up as a business. A focus was put on the relationship between employer and contractor, tips and advice on company structures, how to handle taxes, GST, per diems and expenses.

  • Tuesday 29 November, 5.30pm - 8.30pm

    This workshop investigated how to sustain a business, which will included tools like business mapping, exit strategies and more. In addition, the session examined the importance of networking and navigating what that looks like in a global pandemic climate.

  • Wednesday 30 November, 5.30pm - 8.30pm

    In the final of the workshop sessions, students practice pitched their idea to other workshop participants and to the course facilitator. The session garnered feedback on personal pitching styles before the pitch to industry professionals the following week.

  • Participants had the opportunity to pitch their idea to industry professionals for feedback who work for brands such as Netflix, Disney, TVNZ, 108 Media and more. Their pitches were a short 6-minute pitch followed by questions and feedback from the Zoom panel.

Dr Leon Gurevitch

Associate Professor & Associate Dean of Research at Victoria University of Wellington - School of Design

Leon Gurevitch is an Associate Professor at Victoria University of Wellington’s School of Design where he researches global creative industries, transformative technologies and complex systems design. Leon has previously been a Marsden Fund recipient for “The Digital Workshops of the World” Research Project, a visiting scholar at multiple institutions across the United States including Yale University. He is a founding member of the UCLA Cultural Analytics group and has presented invited lectures about his research at Dreamworks, Blizzard Game Studios, WetaDigital, The Universities of California Los Angeles, Berkeley and Santa Barbra, Yale, BeidaBeijing, Shanghai University and many more. Leon has published research and exhibited design work in over 40 international locations and presented over 80 peer reviewed conference papers, keynotes and invited talks around the world in the last ten years. Leon teaches photography and computational culture and is based in the Media Lab at Victoria University.

    Mark has executive produces feature documentaries BORN RACER – The Scott Dixon Story and WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT AI and Associate Producer on DAWN RAID (all for Universal Films) and Executive Producer on feature film PORK PIE (Studio Canal), and most recently was the Associate Producer on WHINA (Cornerstone Films).

  • Steven McKinnon

    Film Producer, Freelance

    Steven McKinnon is a film producer with more than a decade of experience in creative development, financial controlling, and studio management of projects ranging from local independent features right through to global streaming and studio films and series. Steven is drawn to projects with vivid design elements, large creative teams, and exciting new talent, and has overseen productions across territories including Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, and the US.

    He was the financial controller on Jane Campion’s Oscar-frontrunner The Power of the Dog, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst, and has continued to work with Netflix in Finance Management of ANZ and Indonesian titles. Steven produced Justin Dix’s feature film Blood Vessel, starring Nathan Phillips and Alyssa Sutherland.

    Steven co-produced Rodd Rathjen’s AACTA and Berlin award-winning feature debut Buoyancy for Causeway Films, worked as group accountant at See-Saw Films, and was the production accountant on the second season of Campion’s award-winning Top of the Lake.

    Steven’s education extends to both the creative and business spheres. He holds a Masters of Producing (Film & TV) from the Victorian College of the Arts, a Masters of Management (Accounting) from the University of Melbourne, as well as Bachelors degrees in Commerce and Music, and a Certificate IV in Accounting

  • Mia Maramara

    Writer, Producer, Director

    Mia Maramara is a Filipino-born filmmaker with work that has screened both locally and internationally. Her passion for authentic, trailblazing stories has led her to wear different hats in the industry, most notably as a writer, director, and producer.

    She most recently wrote and directed Albularyo (Beyond the Veil) for TV2, which earned her the distinction of being the first Filipino director to helm a prime-time drama on New Zealand TV. In the same year, she released Only Human as part of the Loading Docs initiative.

    Her upcoming projects include writing for feature films Kāinga, the third film in the trilogy of Waru and Vai, and EDF recipient Do It Just to Please Me with Michelle Saville and Eli Kent.

    In the Philippines, she worked under award-winning producer Bianca Balbuena as a production assistant on Pepe Diokno’s film Above the Clouds.

  • Dan Eady

    Operations Manager, Lane Street Studios, NZ

    Dan brings 20 years of experience within the film and television production world, with a recent focus on post production and leading teams and projects through to completion. Previously spending 12 years at Park Road Post Production, including 7 years in a leadership role as Head of Picture, working alongside creative and technical professionals.

    Dan’s high level technical, logistical and planning background combined with a passion for enabling and empowering people puts him at the forefront of building partnerships and relationships across multiple disciplines.

  • Vicci Ho

    Programmer, Chinese & East Asian Cinema, New Zealand International Film Festival, NZ

    Vicci Ho (she / her / hers) is the Chinese and East Asian programmer at Whānau Mārama: New Zealand International Film Festival. She has worked as a festival curator for a variety of International film festivals, including as Director of Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, Assistant Director of San Francisco Asian American Film Festival (now CAAMFest), Programming Associate for Toronto International Film Festival, and as Asian film consultant for San Francisco International Film Festival, Seattle Film Festival, Zurich Film Festival, and Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival. She has sat on juries at the Berlinale, SFIFF, Outfest and Hawaii International Film Festival. After completing her Masters degree at ITP/NYU, Vicci also worked in tabletop games, and is one of the creators of the tabletop card game "Battle of the Boy Bands".

  • Mark Ordesky

    Producer & Co-Founder, Court Five Productions, LA

    Mark Ordesky is an American film and television producer and former Hollywood studio executive. He’s best known for executive producing the Oscar-winning THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy –during which Mark spent the better part of five years in New Zealand supporting his friend Peter Jackson’s historic vision. Mark has acquired or executive produced over 60 films, collectively grossing nearly $4 billion at the worldwide box office, earning 38 Academy Award nominations with 18 wins. Currently, Mark owns/operates Court Five with fellow New Line veteran Jane Fleming –fashioning independent film and TV content for Hollywood studios and broadcasters as well as global streamers such as Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon.

    Mark is a member of the Producers Guild of America, the Television Academy, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Additionally, he is a board member of the American Cinematheque.

  • Gino Acevedo

    Textures Head of Department/Creative Art Director, Wētā Digital, NZ

    In 1998, Makeup and Creature Effects Art Director Gino Acevedo was asked by Richard Taylor to join Wētā Workshop to supervise the special makeup effects and color designs of the creatures for Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Prior to this, Gino had been working in the Los Angeles film industry for more than 10 years.

    During the filming of The Two Towers, Gino was approached by Wētā Digital’s Visual Effects Supervisor, Joe Letteri, who was intrigued by the way Gino had made the skin colouration of a physical silicone puppet of the dead Boromir so believable. Joe then asked if Gino would be interested in texture painting on Gollum.

    Although he saw himself as computer illiterate, Gino grasped the new digital challenges, becoming the Art Director for the digital creatures and the liaison between Wētā Workshop and Wētā Digital. Thus, allowing for a continuous design vision from initial illustrative designs through to the final digital effects shots shown onscreen.

    Gino’s work at Wētā Digital includes HOD of the textures department and creative art director. On King Kong and The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep, Gino along with Richard Taylor supervised the sculpting of the maquettes for digital scanning, and making the physical silicone puppets used for environment and actor interaction. These were later replaced with the digital creature that is seen onscreen.

    As Creature Art Director on Avatar, Gino oversaw 52 Wētā Digital texture artists. They used innovative techniques of life casting, to achieve details such as minute skin pores which were cast in silicone and scanned. They were then applied to the digital models breathing life and colour into the world of Pandora.

    Gino has recently finished work on Pete’s Dragon . Before that he was focused on the critically acclaimed summer blockbuster Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and the final film in Peter Jackson’s epic Hobbit trilogy, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

  • Sean O'Donnell

    Director, DOP, Editor, Tall Poppy Films, NZ

    Sean is an experienced Director/Cinematographer with extensive Post Production experience. He brings visualisation and storytelling techniques combined with specialist expertise to complex projects.

    He began his career with the New Zealand National Film Unit where he gained solid experience in all areas of production. His experience ranges from shooting Feature Films and Television Drama Series to filming and editing Documentary Productions, TV commercials and music videos. In the area of Post Production he has edited and colour graded various primetime television productions and has had experience working on major productions requiring complex visual effects, including working with the Wētā Digital team.

    Sean also works part time as a Senior Lecturer/Tutor on film at Massey University, Wellington.

  • Mikhail Red

    Independent Filmmaker and Director, Singapore/ Philippines

    Mikhail RED (1991, Philippines) is an independent filmmaker who was guided from a young age by his father, filmmaker Raymond Red, who is a Palme d'Or winner. He wrote and directed his first short film at 15, earning recognition at local and international film festivals. He continued making short films which were screened worldwide, and made his first long feature film Recorder in 2013. This film won five international awards, including Best New Director in Vancouver. His second feature Birdshot (2016) won Best Film in the Asian Future section in Tokyo and was selected as the official Filipino entry for the Oscars.

  • Jonny Kennerly

    Production, Netflix ANZ, Sydney

    With over 24 years experience in the film & television industry, in both New Zealand and Australia, Jonny Kennerley recently joined Netflix in the ANZ Production team in May 2021.

    Prior to joining Netflix, Jonny line produced the feature film "Carmen" and TV Series, "Wakefield" for ABC & Showtime, "The Secret She Keeps" for Channel Ten & BBC, and "Reckoning" for AXN (Sony). Although predominantly working in scripted long-form, Jonny has also enjoyed working in various roles on un-scripted, commercials and documentaries.

  • Brooks McLaren

    Writer & Producer for Film, TV & Documentaries, LA

    As a writer/producer for film, tv, and documentaries, Brooks brings a unique and diverse perspective to his work. In 2018 he was the Creator and Executive Producer of the Netflix summer hit HOW IT ENDS. His most recent scripts include the RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD reboot for Millennium Films, and the original FIGHT OR FLIGHT, voted to the 2020 Hollywood Blacklist, and set up with Thunder Road, the producers of Sicario and John Wick. Currently Brooks is working with director Espen Sandberg (Kon-Tiki) and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way on a radical ecological thriller about saving the Amazon Rainforest. The story is personal for Brooks as prior to his career as a storyteller, he worked in the alternative energy sector fighting climate change.

  • Jenean Atwood Baynes

    Festival Director, Omni Cultural TV Fest, LA

    For almost two decades, Jenean Atwood Baynes has work in multiple facets of the industry’s ecosystem from major studios and production companies to talent agencies and non-profit organizations that produce markets and conferences for content buyers, sellers and distributors both domestically and internationally. She is also integral to the process of developing and presenting programming with high-profile speakers and VIPs around trending industry topics.

    Under her own shingle, PH10 Creative Consulting, she pursues what she does best: helping writers and content creators fine tune their projects and make valuable industry connections. In this capacity, she also works as an independent contractor for major industry entities such as NAB and NATPE overseeing special events, program development and onsite show management.

    Recently, Jenean returned to the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) at the request of the President & CEO as the Director, Buyers Initiative focusing on domestic and international buyer registration, retention and relationships. This was going to be a particularly exciting time as the organization was planning to move its January tentpole market & conference to the Bahamas after residing at the Fontainebleau in Miami for years.

    Previously, Jenean worked at NATPE for over a decade. Seeing the need for additional services, she repositioned herself there in 2012, spearheading a new department as NATPE’s Director of Buyer Initiatives focusing on buyer retention, outreach and future prospects by maintaining current relationships, fostering new ones and developing prospective buyers for future events. Through pre-market and onsite customized services, she also worked closely with buyers to improve their experience at NATPE’s markets & conferences. As an essential component of registration, Jenean supported the Sales Team by actively connecting its exhibitor/sponsor/producer clients with key buyers. Ultimately, she was the internal and external buyer liaison ensuring that NATPE’s marketing efforts and special initiatives attracted qualified buyers and also leveraged those relationships to connect buyers with key clients. Previously, Jenean served as Exec. Asst. to the president of NATPE and was instrumental in coordinating various NATPE-related events and programs. Her tenure included the very successful NATPE Pitch Pit at PitchCon and PRO Pitch at NATPE Miami where she was responsible for booking 50+ top level agents, broadcast, cable, digital and studio development executives and scheduling over 600+ pitch meetings. Upon exiting this full-time position, she was brought back seasonally to work a host of special events including the Reality Breakthrough Awards, the Buyers Lounge and the Brandon Tartikoff Awards.

  • Jason Hintz Llopis

    Interactive Experiences Designer, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, Imagineering & Studios, Orlando

    Over the past 30 years as an experience designer, creative innovator and veteran producer, Jason’s career has always been at the heart of The Walt Disney Company. Through “Pocahontas”, “Tarzan”, “Bolt”, “Princess and the Frog”, “Tangled” and many other films, Jason produced and pushed the envelope of computer graphics at Walt Disney Animation Studios. He was then invited to Walt Disney Imagineering R&D where he developed theme park innovations for Disneyland in California & Shanghai Disneyland and implemented new technologies on a number of films including “Disney’s The Jungle Book,” Marvel’s “Avengers: End Game” and Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: Rogue One.”

    Today, Jason lives in Florida with his husband Noel and creates new digital attraction experiences for Disney’s Parks, Resorts, and Cruise Line. His family is hosting their 18th and 19th high school exchange students from Bosnia Herzegovina and Brazil. Past students have come from New Zealand, Argentina, Japan, and across Europe. Their daughter recently graduated with a degree in design at the University of California at San Diego.
