Digital Exports Project.
New Zealand & Southeast Asia
Miramar Creative partnered with the South East Asia Centre of Asia Pacific Excellence (SEA CAPE) to develop two pieces of work that will provide opportunities for improved creative digital exports from New Zealand to Southeast Asia.
Together, we have developed a remote creative business collaboration project between New Zealand and Southeast Asia, a research on digital economies in Southeast Asia and the potential innovation development opportunities between New Zealand and South East Asia
We wish to thank the Southeast Asia Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence for supporting this project

Creative Digital Collaboration
Miramar Creative with Beyond Studios in NZ has been connecting with a range of creative organisations in Southeast Asia to provide a tangible example of a digital gaming collaboration that took place completely remotely between April and October 2020. We have also put together a range of show reels of the work of 7 organisations in the region.

Wellington’s Beyond Studios were commissioned to collaborate with a team of Designers in Southeast Asia to develop a game level.
This part of the project supported a game development collaboration between teams in New Zealand and Vietnam, specifically commissioned to demonstrate these remote business practices and how they can apply to a range of businesses - not just those within the digital creative sector. The project was conducted entirely online.
As Jessica Manins, CEO of Beyond said, “we jumped at the chance to show the power of collaboration using digital tools. Remote collaboration is not the future, but the now”.
Outcomes of the Project
1. Establish ongoing relationships with our Southeast Asia counterparts to develop future gaming and digital media projects.
2. Use remote business practices to improve communication and collaboration.
3. Design and implement a specifically developed new level and integrate this into Beyond’s free roaming VR game Oddball.

The Research
Associate Professor Leon Gurevitch (Victoria University of Wellington School of Design Innovation) presents his Creative Industries Market Insights Research report as part of the collaboration between Southeast Asia and New Zealand.
The research focused on how the Gaming, App Development and Interactive Media industries utilise remote business practices and how other industries could adopt these practices in an environment with limited physical contact. The research focuses in particular on Malaysia and Singapore and includes a comparison of the two markets’ similarities, differences and specific opportunities for NZ businesses.
